A mathematician cracks the code to help airlines capture millions in new revenues

A mathematician by trade, I am drawn to complex problems.

So it’s natural that one day whilst sitting in an airport, I started crunching numbers.

Imagine managing an airline with 600 aircraft of ten different sizes, flying to 200 airports. Imagine trying to figure out the most efficient routes and frequencies between these 200 cities, and deciding which day of the week and time of the day any of these ten types of aircraft could fly. Finally, imagine trying to do all of this, while also considering what your competitors are doing and what your customers actually want, so that you could reach maximum profitability for your airline network.

Since that day at the airport, I have been working on an algorithm that could find the needle in this haystack of options, and provide the most effective solution to such a complex problem. Taking my past academic experience, including teaching roles at M.I.T and the University of Florida, combined with my business know-how, has all led to creating the most innovative transport software on the market. What began as a brainstorm in an airport has now led to a worldwide company with offices all over the globe, and a first-class team hailing from over 20 countries.

As the Founder and CEO of Optym, my mission is to develop intelligent solutions that help companies reduce their operational costs, increase their profitability, and improve their service quality. Today I’m happy to announce that with the investment and support of Amadeus, Optym is releasing a new suite of solutions that will help airlines do just that.

Dr. Ravindra K. Ahuja, President and CEO, Optym

We’ve partnered with Amadeus because we are confident that its global network, technical sophistication, and knowledge of the travel industry makes this company the perfect partner to help Optym develop new technologies and to distribute our innovative solutions throughout the world.

With our unique algorithms, this new suite of airline network planning and scheduling solutions, the SKY Suite, can provide airlines with fully optimized schedules based on accurate forecasts in just a few hours. They can also create schedules from scratch, or from “a clean sheet”, thus giving airlines more strategic flexibility, while opening new scheduling opportunities that may have previously gone undiscovered.

We think airline network planning is ready for some new, innovative thinking, and we are excited to be playing a role in leading the industry forward.

I am confident that these new solutions have the potential to help airlines unlock millions in new revenues. For travellers, it could also mean less time sitting in an airport terminal. I’ll have to find a new place to brainstorm for my next idea…
